When I was a kid in Phoenix, a teeny New York bagel place named Chompie's opened by my highschool and became my prototype bagel. They were cheap.Perfect highschool food. My NHS chapter sold them at fund raisers. They were small and chewy and hard and yummy. They were even approved by my good NY born friend whose family uprooted her to Phoenix from Long Island her senior year ( poor thing) and she and her family were super PICKY.
After moving to Oregon I kinda gave up on bagels for the most part. Carbs. Also they usually are too fluffy and just not right. Bagels shouldn't really crumble the way most local bagels do. And they are HUGE . Weirdness.
I read that this place had actual boiled bagels AND espresso and decided to give it a shot with a friend. I was there early today on a Saturday morning after dropping my teen at work. We lucked out and got a reasonable parking spot. It is all street parking and there is a spanking new Blue Star Donuts and Little Big Burger in the same building with a Starbuck's in the same block. I would say parking will likely be tight. And it might be hard for someone with disabilities.
The folks serving us at the counter were friendly. There are a few tables and barstools. There are a couple outside tables for nicer days. They have a nice selection of bagel sandwiches, toppings, a soup of the day ( it was lentil on this day and smelled savory and good) and bagels come in a variety of flavors. They have vegan bagels too. Oh, and espresso.
In addition to breakfast I got a baker's dozen to go. I like that it is 13 bagels for a set amount. Some places near me charge more for " special flavors" or do not throw in a 13th. I like that multigrain bagels are available in more than one flavor. I like the cream cheese offerings although we didn't try them.
In the words of my kid, I approve. My only hesitation is the prices, but I think the food is good quality so maybe it is fine. I think I will have to go back just to be sure.
My bagel was yummy as was my coffee. I have a golden raisin and fennel bagel to try at home tomorrow. I will pop some in the freezer too for later. Yay :) -

really excellent bagel sandwich - I saw their feature $5 Egg and Cheese on Instagram or something and it looked tempting. So, after doing some business with Unitus next door I thought I'd drop in - I am sure their traffic is limited because of all the construction taking place in front of their store.
The place was calm, light alternative music overhead, sort of an industrial feel. The gal behind the counter gave a weak greeting and continued on with her tasks. It was no frills, the service and personality, but the bagel was great! I chose the Salt and Pepper Bagel and Cheddar Cheese. Waited a few minutes and the bagel was ready.
Folks inside reading, chatting. It was pleasant, but not overly warm.
Got the job done and I'd return again. -

Salt bagel with veggie cream cheese is great. Coffee is good.
It's 62 degrees and overcast and the AC is on what feels like full blast and the front sliding door is wide open. It's clear they don't want people to feel comfortable or stick around. -

Spielman's is new to the 'hood - we finally dropped by to try them out. Stopped in and had breakfast. The wife and I both got egg & cheese bagels with veggie sausage. I got the salt bagel and she got the cheddar jalapeno bagel. Both were great, especially the latter. We'll be back!

The bagels are good and the service is fast and friendly, at least it was the two times I stopped by. I love the wide verity of flavor options, which include seasonal and vegan options. What I really love is that they offer whole wheat bagels with actual flavor options rather than just plain. Just because you're health conscious doesn't mean you don't like everything bagels! The fact that the understand this is amazing!
I've only ever ordered bagels without smear or anything for home consumption, but the sandwiches and lox options look good, so I'm planning to go back to try em at some point.
